Why NIN are such cool freakin dudes      7/24/2009

Presented by Craig Johnston and Brian Hull

The band Nine Inch Nails recently released a ground-breaking geo-Twitter-like iPhone / Google Earth plug-in application. This follows on the heels of many creative uses of KML and Google Earth to communicate with fans. This talk is from the software developer team that supports the band.

Throughout the last couple of years Google Earth has enabled us to present amazing visualizations and perspectives to those interested in Nine Inch Nails, from releasing download numbers of the latest album, plotting tour-dates and geo-cached ticket treasure hunts to the latest realtime integration with geo-located mobile fans. We present our conceptual and technical experiences integrating the Nine Inch Nails online community with Google Earth and the Google Earth plugin.

The Pros And Cons Of A Laptop      9/30/2008

A laptop, also called a notebook, is a small mobile computer. Depending on the size, material used for manufacturing it and other factors, its weight ranges from 1 to 8 kilograms (i.e. 2 to 18 pounds).

The source of power is usually a single main battery, or an external AC/DC adapter is used. Apart from supplying power to the laptop, it also charges the battery. To avoid havoc in case of power failure, a 3 Volt cell is provided to run the clock and other vital system processes.

Though laptops are equally capable and powerful as desktop computers, they are much more expensive than similar capability and configuration desktop computer. Size is the unique property of a laptop. The components used in both, laptops and desktops are the same in terms of the functions they perform, but the components in laptops are miniaturized and made to support efficient power consumption.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is usually the technology used for the display screen. They have a built-in keyboard and a touchpad as input devices. Provision is also made for connection of external mouse, and even keyboard.

Apart from the advantages like compactness and mobility, a set of disadvantages has also been associated with laptops.

A huge amount of discrepancy is observed when it comes to standardization issues of laptops. There exist worldwide standards for form factors of the peripherals and add-in PC cards used in a desktop computer. But no such standards are as yet enforced for form factors of laptop internals. Electric voltage, motherboard layouts, internal adapters used in connecting the hard disk, optical drive, LCD cable, keyboard and floppy drive to the main board, all still face issues with standardization. These hits hard on the poor user who is uneducated in this relevant field. Apart from them, a bit of difficulty may also be faced by the repair technicians. Familiarization of different parts and hardware that perform the same function is important.

As an outcome of the improper, or all most no standardization, the laptops suffer compatibility problems too. Most of the times, it is not possible to use one manufacturer`s components in the laptop produced by another manufacturer. The reasons behind this can be assurance of product stability, prolong product lifetime, and to avoid dubious warranty issues. Some manufacturers provide the laptops with a set of ports to let the user connect the hardware that he wants to use.

Upgradation of a laptop is another issue. Due to both technical and economic reasons, it is limited. Due to the proprietary designs of the laptops by each manufacture, it is difficult to upgrade them and most of the times even repairing is a costly affair. The standard peripherals, like audio, video, USB, 1394, Wi Fi, Bluetooth, are integrated in the motherboard. Upgrading these thus requires either of external ports, card slots or wireless peripherals. As far as the memory units and batteries are concerned, they can generally be upgraded according to the user`s needs.

Performance is another issue. RAM is shared between program memory and graphic adapters in laptops. Because of which performance of the laptop is affected. The major concern of the designer is compactness and energy efficiency against high performance. Generally, for the home requirement, laptops prove out to be good options for fast achievement of required performance. With new technology like dual core processors and perpendicular recording, laptops` performance is already showing a progressive graph when compared to the desktops.

Laptops can also pose health hazards. Temperature generated by laptop can affect sterility in men. Also, laptop keyboard can lead to RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury). Thus it is advised to place the laptop on a table or desk when working.

Using Voice Recognition With Bluetooth Cell Phones      9/30/2008
When you are on the road you need to be able to receive calls on your mobile phone. It is unrealistic of legislators to say that no calls should take place while you are driving. I do agree that you should not use a hand to hold your phone to your ear. I also agree that any use of the cell phone must remove the need to look away from the road to operate it. But with the introduction of better voice recognition applications there is simply no need to use a cell phone in an unsafe way.

Bluetooth headsets are absolute boons to working folks across the world. As phones increasingly support the wireless standard, these headsets allow them to talk hands free and concentrate on other activities, such as driving or merely walking around. It sure is much more enjoyable to walk around when you don't have to hold a phone to your head, and it's much safer to drive when you can keep both eyes on the road. If you want a headset that is good for talking on the phone but not much else, then a Bluetooth mobile headset is the choice to make to save you money.

The voice recognition systems mean that when a call comes in you can answer it with your voice. When you want to make a call you simply use your voice to instruct the mobile phone to make the call.

Voice Recognition Advances

The early voice recognition cell phones were not very good. They were difficult to set up and did not work with all voices. Now that processor technology has improved so much, the audio signals can now be deciphered quickly and accurately. The software has been developed to take account of regional accents and dialects. The most important improvement is that the software “learns” the voice of the owner over time. So the accuracy becomes better and better over time. This voice technology has vastly improved the functionality of Bluetooth cell phones. The voice recognition software is also being applied to desktop computing and other business uses.

As a result of these improvements drivers can make and receive calls safely. They do not need to look or even touch their cell phone

Bluetooth mobile phones detect the driver's voice and place the call automatically, and then the driver can talk without holding the phone to an ear by using a Bluetooth enabled headset or using the Bluetooth cell phone's speaker phone functionality. Keeping hands on the wheel and eyes on the road makes driving that much safer, not just for the driver but for everybody on the road.

The other reason that voice recognition works better is that the Bluetooth headsets are more comfortable and the microphones are more sensitive. The microphones are also good at filtering out unwanted noise and other sounds. The combination of better voice recognition and Bluetooth headsets makes hands free calls in your car as safe as it can be. What needs to happen is for drivers to buy in to this voice recognition technology and stop using their hands and eyes to make calls. It always amazes me that someone will drive a £30,000 car and not spend another £100 on a decent Bluetooth headset to help them drive safely.
